The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly curtailed our travel plans, and thus the material available to me for the monthly updates of this site. Since I did not want to stop adding content, I was forced to draw on existing photos (as I did with a first sampler back in February), or discuss various technical photography topics (for instance, a description of the Fujifilm X Raw Studio software I published last month). At the moment, the situation seems to be improving a little bit, and I have high hopes that I will be able to present something new in the update scheduled for May, but for now I am going with another photo sampler as more than one person (OK, two people) have expressed an interest for one. Some of these images have been shown on this site before, but several have not, so there should be at least a few new things on this page.

I'll start things off with the photo above that does not quite fit in with the rest on the page as far as its size is concerned. It is an unusual panorama in that I combined two horizontal photos to create the picture. Click on the image to display the large (6,400 x 2,400 pixel) version. As you can see from the EXIF data shown, the camera used was a Nikon D300; it has a resolution of 12.3 megapixels, making the largest possible single image file 4,288 x 2,848 pixels. Speaking of EXIF data, as with the first photo sampler, I am including some basic information below each image. The focal length is always given in 35mm equivalent values, though except for the D750, none of the cameras used had a full frame sensor.

The above photo evokes a particularly pleasant memory. After having visited the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, I was waiting for the rest of the group to be done while many other tourists were lining up in the square waiting to get in. A policeman was walking back and forth supervising the crowd. When he was looking in my direction, I pointed at him and at my camera, wordlessly asking him if I could take his picture. He indicated that I could not by shaking his head from side to side, then held up his index finger, asking me to wait. He walked over to his scooter, cast a quick glance into one of the rearview mirrors, adjusted his beret, sat down, and finally, adopting a very stern look, signaled with a nod that I could take the picture. I did so, and walking over toward him, I asked him with a hand motion to join me. The two of us then looked at his photograph on the small screen of my camera, and his face lit up with a huge smile. We shook hands, he continued monitoring the crowd, and I joined my group and our tour bus. We did not exchange a single word, yet we definitely communicated.
