Harbor view of Cassis

This page contains photographs of Cassis taken during a day trip on March 30, 2008. Cassis is a touristy little Mediterranean town just east of Marseille; it is mostly famous for its calanques, which are rocky inlets, or criques, framed by very light-colored limestone cliffs. Boat tours leave every 30 minutes for the calanques; on the day of our visit, only the short (45-minute) 3-calanques tour was available because we were told the sea was pretty rough. At first, we had a hard time believing this, but as soon as the small craft (seating about a dozen people) left the shelter of the harbor, we were jostled around quite a bit, which was good fun. Lunch in one of the many eateries on the harbor was delicious; this is definitely the place to eat seafood! Given more time, many of the areas surrounding the calanques can be explored on foot, though this will have to wait for another visit.
