Fall Colors Recipe

In an earlier post, I had emphasized the value of post-processing digital images, but that mostly applied to images shot in raw. What about shooting in JPEG? One of the things Fujifilm cameras are known for is the quality of their out-of-camera JPEG images, i.e., images that can be shared as is without requiring any postprocessing. This is because with Fujifilm, one does not simply opt to shoot in JPEG: one chooses a film simulation and can adjust a certain number of parameters. A set of such parameters applied to a particular film simulation is called a recipe, and there are several websites that offer Fujifilm recipes, for instance Fuji X Weekly. I described film simulations in more detail on this page.

For this month, the idea was to produce a few out-of-camera JPEGs. These were opened in Photoshop and cropped from the original 7728x5152 pixels to the 1668x1112 (displayed as 834x556) used on this page. No other changes of any kind were made to the images.

On this walk through Southern Village, our Chapel Hill neighborhood, I used my Fujifilm X-T5 with a Fujinon 55-200mm telephoto lens (equivalent to 83 to 300mm in full frame) and Fall Foliage, a recipe of my own, the specifications of which are given at the bottom of this page. I was shooting in aperture priority mode at ƒ/5.6 (adjusted to ƒ/5 on two images). In the EXIF information provided below each picture, the focal lengths are given in full frame equivalent values.

There are three ways to obtain JPEG images from a Fujifilm camera: One can shoot in raw and use the camera, either directly or with the Fujifilm X Raw Studio software, to convert the image to a JPEG, one can shoot in raw + JPEG and obtain the JPEG image directly, or one can shoot in JPEG only. Regardless of what method is chosen, it is always possible to select a film simulation and tweak certain parameters (if no such selection is made, the Provia simulation is chosen with default settings). Here are the parameters of the Fall Foliage recipe that was used to capture the photos shown on this page:

Parameter  Value    Parameter  Value    Parameter  Value
Image Size  L 3:2    Color Chrome FX Blue  Off    Color  +2
Image Quality  Fine    Smooth Skin Effect  Off    Sharpness  0
Push/Pull Processing  +1/3 EV    White Balance  Auto    High ISO Noise Reduction  0
 Film Simulation  Velvia    White Balance Shift  R: +1 B: -1    Clarity  +1
Grain Effect  Off    Highlight Tone  +0.5    Lens Modulation Optimizer  On
Color Chrome Effect  Strong    Shadow Tone  +0.5    Color Space  sRGB

Being able to get good quality JPEG photos without postprocessing, either in addition to raw images or by themselves, is extremely convenient. Raw shooters, for example, can convert certain images to JPEGs using just the camera. The free Fujifilm XApp for smartphones allows sending JPEGs of faces and places via email when traveling. This is a much improved version of the older Fujifilm Camera Remote app that was not very popular because, frankly, it was pretty bad. The new app works perfectly for wireless image transfer, backing up and restoring camera configurations, and even applying firmware updates to camera and (original Fuji) lenses. I still find it unreliable for geotagging, though, which is why use Geotag Photos Pro. This smartphone app with its companion desktop application has never let me down. I recommend it without hesitation to anyone who wishes to geotag their photos.

Happy shooting!
