People

To kick off the new year, I'm presenting a different kind of sampler, this time all about people. I don't mean people who happened to be in the frame while I was taking a picture, but people who are the subject of the photo. We are not talking about family snapshots or portraits: I do not know a single person in the photos displayed below, and except in a couple of instances (numbers 4, 12, 13, and 17), the subjects were completely unaware that they were being photographed.

A few details are provided under every image: place and time taken, camera make and model, focal length (in full frame equivalence), ISO value, shutter speed, aperture, and, when used, exposure compensation in stops. A table of all the cameras used to take these photos may be found at the bottom of this page. Clicking on any photo displays it in a larger size (2700 pixels wide). Several of these photographs have already appeared on this site, though many have not. They all tell a story, but rather than adding streams of words to this page, I'll leave it up to each viewer to spin his or her own yarn. As an example of what prompted these images, I'll just comment on the first one:

I shot this through a closed train window and across an empty track at the Nice train station in May of 2001. Obviously, I don't know any of these people. so why did I take the photo? Because it tells a story, or rather, it invites the telling of a story. Who are these people? Where are they going? Which ones are traveling together? What are they all thinking about? When I saw the scene, it raised all these questions in a flash, and I had a mere instant to take the shot because my train had just begun to move. When I look at this photo today, I feel the same curiosity and a story that almost begs to be told. Perhaps someday, I shall write one that goes with the photo.
