Daniel's cousin Evelyne's house in Petit Landau is home to a varying number of cats (roughly a dozen at the time of writing); some she rescues and brings home, some wander in on their own. David's and Daniel's visit on July 25, 2008 coincided with the dramatic rescue of two kittens that had been born in a miniscule space under Evelyne's roof and then abandoned by their mother. For an entire week, the tiny creatures were trapped with neither food nor water until their plaintive sounds were finally heard. Sadly, the light-colored one, in spite of being rushed to the vet immediately, only survived for three days. The dark kitten did not appear to require immediate veterinary assistance, devoured as much liquid food as we cared to administer with a syringe, and was pretty feisty from the start. Erich, the companion of Evelyne's sister Béatrice, will take the cat at the end of August, though it is not entirely clear to us who adopted whom!
