On December 6, 2017, we flew to Lisbon. Years ago, we had booked a stay in the Portuguese capital, but had to cancel for reasons beyond our control. It was high time to make a second attempt! We had booked an apartment for three nights in the very center of the old town; the flight from Nice airport took only two hours and a few minutes, and shortly after 3 p.m. we were at our temporary home in the Rua do Crucifixo. We didn't wcashelaste any time and began exploring the surrounding areas.
The next day, after a leisurely breakfast, we made our way to Rossio Square from where we climbed up the hill of the Carmo Convent. We had a cappuccino in the coffee shop of what turned out to be the oldest bookstore in the world: Livraria Bertrand opened in 1732 and has been in continuous operation ever since! We took the San Justa Elevator to get back to sea level. In the afternoon, we rode a streetcar to Belém a district in the southwest of Lisbon. There, we admired the Jerónimos Monastery and the Monument of the Discoveries before taking a bus back into town.
