Several years ago, after I purchased my first Apple Cinema display, I published a series of photos sized to be used as desktop images (or wallpaper, if you prefer). At the time, they were also published by ResExcellence (the old Michael Coyle site, not the current one) and written up in The Mac Observer back in 2005. The resolution of the photos ranged from 1280 x 800 to 1920 x 1200, and in a third series to 2560 x 1600. In 2012, I also published a series of black-and-white desktop images, and in 2014, after I got my first Retina-display MacBook Pro, a few photos in a resolution of 2880 x 1800 (links to all these collections may be found in the index on the left).
When I started using a 27-inch iMac with Retina display, I made a whole collection of desktop photos for my own use at a resolution of 5120 x 2880, but I never published any of them until now. What prompted me to do so is that on March 8, 2022, Apple announced a new 27-inch Studio Display. It replaces the LG UltraFine 5K Display previously sold by Apple. These displays, along with the many 27-inch Retina iMacs out there, have the exact same resolution and are practically the only 5K displays in use today. The desktop images on this page are made for them.
Photos 3, and 7 are taken from much larger panoramas (typically 12 to 16 vertical photos stitched together); all others are single images. Exposure information is provided for every photo; all focal lengths are given in 35mm equivalent values. Clicking on any picture will cause the corresponding desktop photo to be downloaded in .zip format (to prevent the browser from merely displaying it). I hope you enjoy this collection of 5K desktops which you are free to use for non-commercial purposes.
