Venice

When I first published version 3 of this web site in January of 1999, the Venice page was already part of it; indeed, it had been migrated from our CompuServe-hosted original web site where it had been online since 1997! Clearly, it was high-time I updated the page, the oldest one on the site. It turns out that I have not been to Venice since 2004, so I had to use the photos from that trip; they were taken with my first digital SLR, the Nikon D70 that I had purchased just five days earlier. Because the camera and kit less combo was sold out everywhere, I had to settle for the body with a Sigma 18–50mm ƒ/3.5–5.6 lens, certainly no match for the Nikkor 18–70mm lens I acquired later. In those days, I didn't even know what it meant to shoot in raw (my earlier point-and shoot digital cameras didn't do that), so the pictures on this page were all made from JPEG originals. Still, these are the most recent digital photos I have of Venice, so they will have to do.

You can't talk about Venice without mentioning Gondolas! There are two main tourist activities in Venice: taking a ride in a Gondola and feeding the pigeons on the Piazza San Marco. Despite having been to Venice several times, I have never indulged in the former, though I have more than made up for it with the latter. However, Gondolas are quite photogenic with their distinctive shape, and it is fun to watch the skillful gondoliers weave their boats through the sometimes considerable traffic on the canals. All this to say that I must include at least a few Gondola photos on this page.

Speaking of windows, there's a bewildering variety of them in Venice: some are very elegant, some have elaborate structures, some are simple, almost austere, and many have definitely seen better days. Judge for yourself and see if you can guess which category each one falls into!
