This year, our fall visit to North Carolina corresponded almost exactly with the dates of the State Fair: we arrived on October 17 and left on October 30 whereas the State Fair opened its door on October 16 and closed on October 26. On Sunday, October 19, we showed up bright and early (well, around 10:30 a.m.) for what was my first attendance of this event. I did not have an idea of what to expect, but I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. True, we missed the pig races and tractor pull events, but in spite (or possibly because) of that, we saw plenty of worthwhile things: the Village of Yesteryear (where local arts and crafts are shown by artisans in historical costumes), a wonderful flower exhibit, a collection of old farm machinery and equipment, a steam-operated saw mill, animals from waterfowl to Brahman cattle, a state-record breaking pumpkin weighing in at over 1,400 pounds (!), and much more. All in all, a great time was had by all, and it's an event I will definitely have to attend again: I still need to see those pig races...
