The shore of Carrot Island, across Taylor's Creek from Beaufort |
On July 11, 2017, we embarked on another two-night trip, this time to Beaufort, North Carolina. On the way, we stopped in New Bern for lunch. This town was founded by Swiss and German immigrants in 1710 and was state capital for a while. In 1893, local drugstore owner Caleb Bradham started selling a beverage he named "Brad's Drink", today known as Pepsi. Thus, New Bern can be regarded as the birthplace of PepsiCo.
In the afternoon, we drove to Beaufort, just under an hour away. We checked into the Inlet Inn and started exploring the town. The following morning, we took a little boat to Carrot Island where we hoped to encounter some of the famed wild horses. However, in spite of seeing plenty of digestive evidence of their presence, we didn't glimpse a trace of the animals themselves. There were plenty of birds in the Rachel Carson Reserve. Since it was rather hot and very humid, we had asked to be picked up after an hour, and our captain was right on time.
Later, we visited the North Carolina Maritime Museum and continued exploring Beaufort. Before getting back to our hotel, we stopped at a supermarket where we bought a nice bottle of wine and some nibbles so that we could take advantage of the lovely porch that came with our room. In the evening, it was cool enough to sit outside, enjoy the view, and sip a chilled rosé. We decided to come back to both New Bern and Beaufort, but preferably in late winter or early spring when it it's not quite that hot. Besides, we still haven't given up on seeing the wild horses!
