Along the Canal d'Arles à Bouc |
From May 8 through 10, 2018, my friend Didier and I spent a delightful three days in the Camargue taking pictures during the tenth festival de la Camargue et du delta du Rhône. Though we had made reservations for several organized activities, we also wandered around on our own. In addition to enjoying great food and company, this outing yielded quite a few photos, some of which are presented here in two installments. This is part 2; click here to see part 1.

Des chevaux, des oiseaux et des hommes
Of horses, birds, and men was the name of our next organized activity scheduled to start at 5 p.m. After having visited the ornithological park and eaten a copious lunch in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, we drove around in search for more photo opportunities. In so doing, we were caught in an incredibly violent downpour; it was raining so hard that we feared our 5 p.m. excursion might be canceled. However, things calmed down after 4:30 in the afternoon, and we set off on schedule in a horse-drawn carriage pulled by Pico and Paco. We explored the area near the shore, stopped to take photos, learned a great deal about the local fauna, and were served dinner on the beach before heading back to the stables.

A boat trip to the Marais du Vigueirat
For this excursion, we went back to the Marais de Vigueirat we had visited in the evening of our first day in the Camargue. This time, we went by boat, and the tour began in the Village de l'Oiseau (see the previous page to revisit these places). From there, we and 18 other participants were driven by van to the canal where our boats were waiting. We then navigated upstream to a different place of the marsh than the one we had visited before. As usual, we were accompanied by a guide who lectured on the local fauna and flora and answered any question we may have had. There was only one guide for all three boats; we all got equal time, and whenever he was finished with one group, the boats moved closer to each other and he jumped from one to the next under the applause of us onlookers. Once we had arrived at our mooring point, we were able to leave our bags while taking a walk through the marsh stopping at a couple of bird observatories on the way. After our picnic lunch, boats and vans brought us back to our departure point. This was a very relaxing, entertaining, and instructive tour!
