Port Tudy, the main harbor of the island of Groix |
Last June, I wrote a vignette about a man whose portrait I shot in 1976 while spending a week on the island of Groix off the southern coast of Brittany. This prompted me to take a look at my slides from back then. I scanned a few of them with my CanoScan 9000F flatbed scanner at a resolution of 9600 dpi using SilverFast software from LaserSoft Imaging. The resulting TIFF files were quite large, between 400 and 500 megabytes per slide, and they had to be cleaned up: despite having been stored with care, the originals had gathered quite a bit of dust over the years. The SilverFast software removed some dust and spots during the scanning phase, but I had to clean up most of the damage by hand in Adobe Photoshop CC. The processed images were then resized and converted to JPEGs using the same software. I chose a subset of the finished slides to display on this page.
These photographs were all taken with a Minolta SR-T-303 camera on Kodachrome 25 slide film during the summer of 1976. At the time, I had three Minolta Rokkor prime lenses: the 28mm ƒ/3.5, the 50mm ƒ/1.7, and the 135mm ƒ/3.5. In the absence of EXIF data, it is not always possible for me to determine which lens was used for which photograph; for the same reason, no technical details (shutter speed, aperture, etc.) can be provided.
In November of 2020, when this page was originally published, the images shown had been taken more than 44 years earlier with a camera that was well over 46 years old. What I find even more amazing is that I still use this same camera occasionally! I began shooting with it again in early 2018, and a description of what that was like is provided on this page.
The island of Groix is a truly magnificent place that is well worth a visit. Sadly, I haven't been back since these pictures were taken, though I plan to revisit someday. Fortunately, you don't have to wait for that to see more recent photographs of Groix: Flore, a young lady from Brittany, has made a wonderful web site dedicated to the island. I strongly encourage you to visit her Discover Groix pages!
