The Iles de Lérins are two small islands about one half a mile off the beaches of Cannes. The last time we posted photos about the Iles de Lérins in these pages, we had visited Saint-Honorat, so now it is the turn of the larger island, Sainte-Marguerite, to be featured. Without a doubt, the main attraction of Sainte-Marguerite is the Fort Royal (built in the early 17th Century); its main claim to fame is that it served as jail to the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask from 1687 through 1698. Sainte-Marguerite is also home to a lovely nature preserve with an astonishing variety of birds, most of which may be observed in the nature preserve around the brackish water pond Etang du Batéguier on the westernmost tip of the island.
The photos on this page were taken on Saturday, November 13. The numbers on the map above give the approximate location of each photo. Note that the last two images were taken on the boat going back to Cannes, so they are not referenced on the map. You can view a video of Sainte-Marguerite, shot on the same day with the same camera.
