It would be quite impossible to look at a calendar and not realize what today’s date stands for, even if one were not bombarded with reminders by television, radio, and the printed press. This is clearly a watershed date, one about which people speak in terms of before and after. Such dates tend to spell trouble; in the US, December 7, 1941 and November 22, 1963 come to mind. Let us spare a thought for all the victims of terrorism who died on this day eight years ago, but also for the many more who have been killed or maimed in different parts of the world as a consequence of what happened in the United States on September 11, 2001.
